Our next hadith is:
عن أبي العباس عبد الله بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ:” يَا غُلاَمُ إِنِّي أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ احْفَظْ اللَّهَ يَحْفَظْكَ احْفَظْ اللَّهَ تَجِدْهُ تُجَاهَكَ إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلْ اللَّهَ وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنْتَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللَّهِ وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ الأمة لَوْ اجْتَمَعَتْ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْفَعُوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَنْفَعُوكَ إِلاَّ بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَلَوْ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى أَنْ يَضُرُّوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَضُرُّوكَ إِلاَّ بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ رُفِعَتْ الْأَقْلاَمُ وَجَفَّتْ الصُّحُفُ” رواه الترمذي ، وأحمد ، وصححه الألباني في صحيح الجامع برقم (7957) .
This hadith is narrated by Abdallah Ibn Abbas, who is known to be ترجمان القرآن (the interpreter of the Quran), Ibn Abbas was a young man who always followed the prophet peace be upon him from his early childhood to learn from him. Ibn Abbas is the prophet’s cousin. The prophet peace be upon him made him dua’a to be a scholar. When the prophet peace be upon him died in 11 year Hijra, Ibn Abbas was 13 years old still, but later lived and died at the age of 68 years old.
In this hadith, Ibn Abbas was sitting behind the prophet peace be upon him on a bull, and he told him the hadith that is mentioned above, which some words are translated as:
غلام: child
إني I am
أعلمك: teaching you
كلمات: words
إذا: if
سألت: you ask
فاسأل الله: then ask Allah.
استعنت: if you needed help
بالله: in Allah.
واعلم : and know
أن الأمة: if the nations
اجتمعت: united
ينفعوك: benefit you
لم: not able
كتبه: wrote on you
لك: for you
يضروك : harm you
عليك: on you
جفت dried
الأقلام: pens
رفعت: risen
الصحف: scripts, notebooks.
